For the last month, IOM Indonesia has been contributing to the national and international humanitarian response to the earthquakes which hit off the West Sumatran Coast on September 30 and October 1.
The quakes left over 1 100 people dead and damaged some 200 000 houses in the remote regions of Padang and surrounds. Hospitals, schools, and livelihoods were all affected by the disaster.
With the support of the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO), that contributed EUR 924 000 to IOM’s West Sumatran response, and the added support of the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and Brazil, IOM will continue to work in the region over the coming months during the move from an emergency into a reconstruction phase.
