Within two days of the devastating earthquake that struck the populous Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces on 27 May 2006, IOM had established a significant response capacity. IOM utilized its long-standing presence in Indonesia and international expertise in emergency response to help some of the 1.5 million people affected by the natural disaster.
In the weeks immediately following the earthquake, IOM’s emergency response activities included logistic, medical and shelter assistance. Programming in early recovery also resulted in the roll-out of various medium- to long-term initiatives. These have included housing for handicapped victims of the earthquake and sustainable livelihood interventions in the form of asset replacement, input of supply, minor construction works and capacity building.
IOM is now helping to restore 3000 micro and small-enterprises (MSE) as part of its Livelihoods programme, funded by the multi-donor Java Reconstruction Fund (JRF). In this programme, which began in March 2008, IOM has been building MSE capacity in areas including market access, business development and technical skills. The beneficiary MSE are from sectors including silver craft, batik production, organic farming, cattle rearing, tofu production and traditional weaving.
The IOM-JRF Livelihoods programme follows the successful implementation of the Mobile Community Assistance Programme (MCAP) and the Roof Tile and Brick Manufacturing Project. These were supported under the Yogyakarta and Central Java Assistance Program (YCAP). |
