IOM Indonesia’s Emergency and Post-Crisis Management programmes provide immediate and coordinated support for recovery to displaced populations in post-disaster situations such as those in Aceh, Nias, Yogyakarta, Central Java, West Sumatra, and in the aftermath of the conflict in Aceh.
Roughly two million people were displaced in Aceh as a result of the December 2004 tsunami and decades of war, and in Yogyakarta, a further one and a half million were left homeless following the May 2006 earthquake. They require help with emergency shelter, logistics, and rebuilding damaged homes and critical infrastructure. Schools, clinics and water supply systems in particular need immediate attention in order to guarantee the long-term stability of communities of return, and in many cases livelihood assistance is essential to ensuring the sustainability of those communities.
Following the signing of the Helsinki Peace Accord in August 2005, IOM’s Post-Conflict Reintegration Programme has supported the Government of Indonesia’s efforts in Aceh to assist former combatants and amnestied political prisoners return home and restart their lives as productive citizens. Successful reintegration is critical in promoting continued peace and reconciliation, and in reinforcing stability in the region. |
