Press Release : Sang Pemimpi Gala Screening

Jakarta, 21 December 2009
The Indonesian National Police (INP), Kontras, and IOM, in partnership with several prominent Indonesian civil society organizations, are hosting a gala event for the screening of “Sang Pemimpi”, the latest film from acclaimed Indonesian Director Riri Riza and Miles Production at XXI Plaza Senayan on the evening of December 21 2009.

Among the 300 prominent guests expected to attend the screening are representatives of the INP, representatives of NGOs and foreign embassies contributing to Indonesian security reform sector and human rights recognition efforts, and the Indonesian National Commissions.

“This occasion is a symbol of our appreciation of a renowned Indonesian film which deals honestly and respectfully with the complexity of modern Indonesia while providing insight into the lives of real Indonesians,” says IOM Police Reform Programme coordinator Monica Tanuhandaru.

Director Riri Riza, producer Mira Lesmana, and selected members of the cast will also attend the gala event, which begins with a pre-screening cocktail party to celebrate the accomplishments of the Indonesian film industry in the wake of the 2009 International Human Rights Day.

Inspector General Nanan Soekarna, head of the INP Public Relations Division, says he hopes “that the film will provide inspiration for development and help ensure justice for the Indonesian people.”

Sang Pemimpi is the sequel to Riza’s 2008 film Laskar Pelangi, a hugely successful work based on the Indonesian best-seller of the same name by Andrea Hirata, which follows the lives of members of a small school community on Belitong as they struggle to make into reality their right to education, despite the challenges posed by poverty and their remote location. Coordinator Usman Hamid from KontraS praises Sang Pemimpi for the inspiration it provides.

"This film proves the dream that is the bridge for hope and aspiration. Let us dream and walk this road together to realize our dream of a country that appreciates its arts and the basic rights of its people.”
