Press Release :
JRF-IOM Livelihood Programme Mini Fair at ViaVia Cafe Yogyakarta Yogyakarta |
| |
| 18 October - 15 November 2009, ViaVia Cafe, Yogyakarta |
|
IOM is displaying the products of its earthquake-affected beneficiaries as part of a mini fair at ViaVia Cafe, Yogyakarta.
The fair, made possible with the kind support of ViaVia, informs visitors of the important work and accomplishments of the IOM livelihoods programme, funded by the Java Reconstruction Fund (JRF).
Micro- and small enterprises (MSEs) from IOM-supported districts devastated by the May 2006 earthquake are showing their products, such as silver jewelry, agel handicrafts, batik and organic vegetables, over four weeks until mid November.
The mini fair offers Yogyakarta residents and café patrons a better understanding of how IOM is helping to return disaster victims’ lives to normal though its programmes, which include training in business development, marketing and promotion.
The livelihoods programme is helping to change lives and also empower women after the earthquake which killed more than 5000 people and devastated the livelihoods of many more in Yogyakarta and Central Java districts.
Johan Grundberg, IOM Programme Manager said: “This mini fair aims to assist beneficiaries of the JRF-funded IOM programme to build their own capacity to implement marketing and promotion strategies, which include product display management and sales techniques during the one month fair.
“Furthermore, the mini fair provides an opportunity for micro-small enterprises to translate their business plan into concrete actions in terms of sales and marketing in order to expand marketing networks and access to both domestic and international markets”.
IOM has organized the mini fair in collaboration with technical teams formed among the beneficiaries themselves.
The selection of ViaVia Café as venue for this event gives MSEs a chance to interact directly with potential customers from Indonesia and other countries, helping to establish contact with the wider domestic and international market.
MSEs benefiting from the mini fair through IOM’s intervention are: the agel handicraft sub-sector in Tuksono and Salamrejo Villages Kulonprogo District; silver craft producers from Pampang Village, Gunungkidul District; organic vegetable producers from Sumberharjo Village, Sleman District; batik producers from Kebon Village, Klaten District.
